Jemaah Anshorut Tauhid (JAT) is an Islamist group in Indonesia that seeks to establish a strict Islamic caliphate. Abu Bakar Ba’asyir founded JAT in 2008 after splitting from Jemmah Islamiya (JI), the organization that killed 200 people in a bombing in Bali in 2002. Even though Ba’asyir was a co-founder and leader of JI, he split to form JAT because of differences in strategy and tactics from the rest of the JI leadership. In 2014, Ba’asyir declared allegiance to the Islamic State. Following this declaration, his sons split from JAT to create a new rival organization focused on implementing Shariah Law, as opposed to establishing a caliphate. Ba’asyir is currently serving a 15-year jail sentence in Indonesia, but is very popular within jihadist communities. JAT was listed as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States Department of State in 2012 because of their responsibility for “multiple coordinated attacks against innocent civilians, police, and military personnel in Indonesia.”
