Majerteen Clan

The Majerteen clan traces its origins back to the 16th century. The formation date recorded by MMP corresponds to the approximate year in which this actor began participating in violence as part of the civil war involving Somali President Siad Barre's government. It is heavily involved in the governance of the Puntland region in northern Somalia. The clan served as the basis for the Majerteen Sultante in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The group’s interests concern its own security and well-being in addition to political power. While it was controlling the administration of the Puntland region, the clan aimed to create a federated Somalia in 1998. The clan also played a role in the formation of the Somali Salvation Democratic Front. While some members of the clan joined Al Shabaab, most have stayed loyal to the fight against the group.
