The Habr Gedir Clan is one of the major subclans of the overarching Hawiye clan. The clan’s exact origin date is unknown, but it can be traced back to the 12th century along with the Hawiye Clan. It continues to aim for more clan power. The clan was involved in the United Somali Congress and the efforts to oust Siad Barre from power. Due to its dominance in the area surrounding the capital Mogadishu, the clan played a role in overthrowing Barre from power, but continued to fight other clans in the region as it tried to claim more power. Currently, the Habr Gedir clan is reported to be aiding the Somali government in the fight against Al Shabaab, capturing territory from Al Shabaab in the Galguduud region in central Somalia.
