Aidid's Militia was the militia led by Somali General Mohammed Farah Aidid and was formed as one entity in the civil war that began in 1991. Aidid also declared himself the president of Somalia following the collapse of Siad Barre’s regime. Aidid was designated as a war criminal following attacks on UN forces by Aidid’s militia. The militia would later help form the Somali National Alliance, and the ultimate goal of the group was political power and control in Somalia. However, Aidid’s son, Hussein Farah Aidid, did not continue the militia following his father’s death in 1996, instead pursuing political ambitions in Somalia.
