The Gulf Cartel ("Cartel del Golfo" in Spanish, also known as the "CDG") formed in the 1920's; however, it only started operating as a drug trafficking organization in the 1980's. The Gulf Cartel was the main rival of the Sinaloa Cartel in the 2000's. Since its split with the Zetas in 2010, it has lost much of its former influence.
